Lawrence N. Virgin | Duke Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science

Virgin was one of the most professional professors I have had at Duke. He responds to all e-mails and listens to suggestions throughout the year. Homework is straight-forward. You get to build an air-foil for the final project. I would recommend this course to any student seeking to fulfill a Core Aerospace Elective of the Aero Certificate. I throughly thought Virgin didn't know how to teach a class. He wasn't in touch with his TA's, had inconsistent testing styles, plowed through hard material in less time than the ridiculously easy parts, and the homework grading was the most absurd thing I've experienced while at Duke.

Good luck in that minefield. He is a very nice guy and starts off with basic materials at a slow pace but pretty soon you find yourself learning new topics rapidly.

You need to cover 17 chapters in this course and he tends to plow through the last His exams are very fair and straightforward and his grading is very fair as well. Overall, it was a good intro EGR course. While Prof Virgin can be a little dull at times he is a very competent lecturer and thoroughly explains every concept that he tests. His tests were fair and of a reasonable difficulty level.

As long as you have done the work you should get a decent grade and learn the majority of the expected material. Highly recommended.
