You really have to look at any of the import stuff personally to see what the quality level is, because it varies a lot.

We bought a new 4'ga box brake from Roper-Whitney sometime in the early 90's. About a month later I looked at a new Jet version of the same brake. The Jet was a better made machine from one end to the other, at about half the price of the R-W.

On a set of rolls you'd need to actually roll some metal at or near capacity to make an assessment of the gearing. Rough cut gears or eccentricity wouldn't show up unless you put the machine under a load. It should roll 2' of 16ga smoothly with minimal effort on the crank.

Any tight spots would be an indication of problems. The curvature of the rolled piece should be very even once you're away from the ends. Slight eccentric operation of any one roll will show up as varying radii as you move around the part, and will show up in operation as varying effort on the crank as it rotates. Depending upon the design, you can rework the metal to the desired shape and dimensions. The slip roll system allows the smooth working of flat material into shapes such as tubes, pipes and cones.

Depending upon the range of adjustment, the slip roll also can bend existing pipes, rods or other round materials to specifications, accomplishing multiple bends with multiple passes through the mechanism.

The slip roller mechanism provides a smooth, secure flow to allow shaping of a flat, rigid material. The primary design includes two roller cylinders that sit above each other, serving as tensioning guides for the material. These vertically and horizontally adjustable cylinders allow for material thickness and the amount of gripping tension required for the job. The third roller, called a forming roller, serves two functions: It provides an adjustable feeding source to promote the bending process, and due to its much wider adjustment range, enhances the bending process to meet shaping needs.

After initial measurements to adjust the clearance for the sheet metal stock to travel through the trailing pinch rollers, you feed the metal across the forming roller into the pinch roller set. These rollers—controlled manually or automatically via a power source—utilize a pinching or trapping action to grip the stock and pull it across the forming roller. During this process, you can stop the stock, allowing adjustment of the forming roller to accomplish a second bend.

You can also shape, bend or weld the stock during this process to accomplish the desired result. If required, you can remove the stock from the machine using a drop hinge installed on the top pinch roller.

The primary benefit of home use is the ability to do the work locally. The pyramid roll design is not ideal for thin gage material or when a leading edge flat spot is problematic.

Pyramid rolls, however, do have some advantages. Because of its wide vertical opening between the top roll and the two lower rolls, heavy structural materials such as small i-beams or heavy rod can be bent. Although also technically pyramid shaped, the more modern Hydraulic Double Pinch 3-Roll Bending Machine is frequently used today.

Double pinch bending rolls have great universality because while the top roll is fixed, both bottom rolls are adjustable. They have the ability to pre-bend both ends of the plate. These features yield less handling and make the Double Pinch 3-Roll bender efficient, desirable, and cost effective.

They have all the benefits of Double Pinch 3-Roll benders with the added feature of having a fourth roll. The top and bottom rolls work together to do all the pinching, allowing the third and fourth rolls to do all the bending.

Tighter diameters can be achieved as the third and fourth rolls bend materials independently form one another. Greater bending control and flexibility yields more accurate bending and ease of use. On this page Kempler also lists their used Urethane Rolls.

Urethane rolls are 2-roll benders that are ideal when it is necessary to form metal without scratching or marring the surface. The drop end feature allows for the end support of the top roll to be dropped away allowing for the removal of tightly formed tanks and cylinders.
